Our Story

Tanzania Agricultural Modernization Association (TAMA) was founded in 2006, driven by the personal story of one of the founders, who lost his younger sister to malnutrition. This painful loss ignited his lifelong commitment to transform agriculture and end hunger. What began as a grassroots initiative has grown into a national platform advancing food security through innovation, advocacy, and farmer empowerment. TAMA works closely with local communities, government, and partners to bridge traditional knowledge with modern solutions—ensuring that farmers are not left behind in Tanzania’s development. Through decades of dedication, TAMA continues to champion a bold vision for a thriving, equitable, and climate-resilient agricultural sector.

TAMA and Wakulima Agri-Food are distinct yet complementary entities with separate governance and management structures. TAMA is a national non-profit association that mobilizes and empowers smallholder farmers through training, advocacy, and access to agri-technologies. It focuses on building farmer capacity and promoting climate-smart agriculture. Wakulima Agri-Food Company Ltd, on the other hand, is a social enterprise that adds value to farmers’ produce by processing nutrient-dense foods and ensuring access to profitable markets. While TAMA strengthens the production side, Wakulima enhances the socioeconomic impact, value chain and market access. Together, they create a holistic model linking farmer empowerment with commercial viability and food security.
